Sweet Home meeting to address possible building closure

The Sweet Home Central School District will hold a meeting this week concerning a recent proposal to close Heritage Heights Elementary School, located at 2545 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.

The board will host a community hearing on the issue before a final decision is reached. It will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Norman Vergils Community Room of Sweet Home High School, 1901 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.

Superintendent Anthony Day said Sweet Home’s elementary-level enrollment dropped from 1,625 to 1,396 during the past 10 years.

If approved by the district Board of Education, this would not be the first time the district has closed a school.

Sweet Home Elementary closed in June 1981, and Dexter Terrace Elementary closed in June 1988. Residents interested in providing input but unable to attend the Heritage Heights meeting may complete a feedback form found at www.sweethomeschools.org. Anyone with comments or questions may also contact Day at his office by calling 250-1402.
